Litchi belongs to the family of Sapindaceae. The plant is a dense, symmetrical, evergreen tree with a dark brown trunk. The tree has erect or drooping branches, depending on the cultivar. The plant can live for many years, and grows to 6–12 m in height. A well-managed litchi orchard usually has about 70 trees per hectare  There are more than 100 commercial cultivars throughout the world . Litchi fruits are oval to round, ca. 25 mm in diameter, and range in color from green to red . The outer pericarp encloses a white translucent pulp and a dark brown seed.
